Founded in 1987, The Beguiling Books & Art began offering library services to school, public, and academic libraries more than 15 years ago. Back then, comics librarianship was in its infancy, and institutions like Toronto Public Library and the Ontario College of Art & Design University looked to us for guidance as their graphic collections really took off.
Now that comics have become a mainstay of all types of library collections, our team of specialists continue to advise on graphic collection development and advocacy for all types of institutions. That's why we are the industry leader in sales and support for graphic collections in Ontario and across Canada.
We have worked with clients from all types of libraries, including large urban systems (e.g. Toronto PL, Ottawa PL, Hamilton PL), medium-sized suburban and rural systems (e.g. Oshawa PL, Western Manitoba Regional PL, Nunavut Dept of Culture, Language, Elders & Youth), single-branch Public Libraries (e.g. Huntsville PL, Clarence-Rockland PL), public and publicly funded Catholic school boards (e.g. Toronto DSB, Peel DSB, Dufferin-Peel Catholic DSB), private schools (e.g. The York School, Branksome Hall), academic collections, both specialized and general (e.g. Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at U of T, Carleton University, University of Saskatchewan), and special collections (e.g. the Canadian Comics Open Library, The Merrill Collection). Comics belong in every type of library!
The Beguiling is happy to help you put together an extensive, informative, appropriate and fun graphic novel collection for your library! Our Library Services team has been in place for more than a decade, offering expert collection development support. Librarians from across Canada and around the world seek us out to supply their libraries with the best that the medium of comics has to offer. Whether for toddlers or seniors, fiction or nonfiction, popular or academic, we are able to help you curate your graphic novel collection to ensure that it addresses the needs of your clientele and remains current, vital, and engaging.
What distinguishes The Beguiling Library Services from other graphic novel distributors is that our expert staff reads (and loves!) comics and is able to offer detailed, specific opinions on the content of the books we carry. Rather than supply a standard catalogue, the library services department hand-picks collections for all types of libraries. We can do collection development for you, curating collections targeted at patrons’ needs and interests, or you can ask us to fill specific requests, top up existing collections or help to create thematic collections.
Our Library Services team wants to make sure that each title we send to your library lands in the right hands. We understand that what may be acceptable in one library or community may be objectionable in another. Our expert staff reads comics and collects information on any potential content concerns for each title we sell to help you make the right decisions for your library.
Automatic Release Plans
Libraries that sign up for our Automatic Release Program (ARP) have the benefit of knowing that their collections are always current and balanced. We will supply your library or library system with new comics on a set schedule: monthly, bimonthly, quarterly, or whatever suits your needs. We can work with any budget, and are flexible and willing to work with your existing curricular or approval plan requirements in whatever way works best for you.
As an alternative to our personalized curatorial services, our easy-to-use webstore and curated booklists offer librarians and educators the opportunity to create their own custom order online.
We are committed to representing the full diversity of the medium of comics on our (and your!) shelves, and carry the widest selection of all things comics, including:
- literary graphic novels
- Canadian graphic novels
- fantasy, sci-fi, and adventure comics
- wordless books
- graphic biographies
- educational materials (e.g. Phonics Comics)
- superhero comics
- manga adaptations of classic literature
- French-language graphic novels (bandes dessinées) and manga
- resources and academic books about comics
